Bookus Privacy Policy

Bookus (“the App”) is a mobile app for creating personal books and notes from photos and text. This policy explains how information is handled when you use the App.

Summary: Your books, photos, and PIN are stored on your device by default. We do not collect or host your book content on our own servers. Google AdMob (ads) and Apple/Google Play (purchases) may process some device-related information as described below.

1. Who we are

2. Information we handle

2.1 Content you create (stored on your device)

The following stays in the App’s private storage on your device and is not sent to our servers:

Book titles, page layouts, and block text
Photos and images you add (from gallery, camera, or document scan)
Hidden text extracted via OCR
Chapters, cover themes, and related metadata
ZIP backup files you export (saved where you choose)

2.2 App settings (stored on your device)

We may store locally:

Language, theme, sort order, and other preferences
Onboarding completion status
Subscription tier (Free / Pro / Pro Plus) after store purchase
Scanner quota usage for feature limits

2.3 Book lock (PIN)

Your PIN is verified **only on your device** and is not transmitted to us.
For locked books, **text and layout** are encrypted on-device using keys derived from your PIN.
**Photo files** remain as regular files in the app sandbox and are not separately encrypted on disk.
If you forget your PIN, locked content may be unrecoverable.

2.4 What we do not collect

The App does not require account sign-up and does not ask for your name, email, phone number, address, location, contacts, or calendar.

4. Purposes of use

5. Device permissions

Denying permissions may limit some features but does not necessarily block access to data already stored in the App.

6. Third-party services

6.1 Google AdMob (advertising)

**Provider:** Google LLC
**Purpose:** Banner and medium-rectangle ads for free users
**Data that may be processed:** Advertising ID, device information, IP address, ad interactions (per Google’s policies)

Subscribers (Pro / Pro Plus) do not see in-app ads.

6.2 Apple App Store / Google Play (in-app purchases)

**Purpose:** Pro / Pro Plus subscriptions, purchase restore
**Processing:** Payment is handled by Apple or Google; we do not receive your payment card details.
The App stores only the resulting subscription tier on your device.

6.3 Google ML Kit (OCR)

**Purpose:** Extract text from photos and scans
**Processing:** Intended to run **on-device** when possible; behavior may vary by OS/SDK version.

6.4 Apple VisionKit / document scanner (iOS)

**Purpose:** Scan book and document pages using Apple’s document camera.

6.5 System text-to-speech

**Purpose:** Read hidden text aloud using iOS/Android system TTS engines.

7. Retention and deletion

We do not host your content remotely, so we cannot recover data after you uninstall the App. We recommend keeping your own ZIP backups.

8. Sharing with third parties

We do not sell, rent, or share your book content or PIN for marketing.

Third-party processing may occur when:

You share exports via the system share sheet
AdMob serves ads
Apple or Google processes payments under their policies

We may disclose information if required by law.

9. Children

The App is not directed at children under 14 (or the applicable age in your region). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Parental supervision is advised.

10. Your rights

You may:

Delete books, photos, and text in the App
Revoke camera/photo permissions in device settings
Limit ad tracking in iOS/Android settings
Manage or cancel subscriptions in the App Store / Play Store
Contact us about this policy (see §1)

Additional rights may apply under GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, or similar laws. Contact us at the email in §1 to exercise them.

11. International transfers

AdMob and store billing may involve processing by Google, Apple, or others located outside your country (e.g., the United States), subject to their policies and applicable safeguards.

12. Security

Locked book text and layout are encrypted on-device using industry-standard methods.
PINs are stored using verification data, not plain text.
**Cloud sync is not currently offered**; data remains local-first.

No method of storage is 100% secure. Keep ZIP backups of important content.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy via app updates, store listings, or by changing the “Last updated” date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
